Pathways
Getting onto a board shouldn't be a mystery. Across New Zealand there are associate director seats, observer roles, nominations services and development programmes designed to bring new people into governance, but they're scattered, and most people never hear about them. We've gathered them here. Most run once a year, so even the ones closed today are worth knowing, so you're ready when they open.
Associate, observer and intern director seats
A real seat at a real board table, usually for a fixed term, to learn governance by doing it.
π Farmers' Mutual Group (FMG) Associate Director — An 18-month seat on the board of the farmer-owned rural insurer, for a current member who's an active farmer or grower and wants to start a governance career. Opens periodically.
π Alliance Group Associate Director — A 12-month seat on the board of the farmer-owned meat co-operative, with a board mentor and induction, for shareholders or their family with governance aspirations. Opens around mid-year.

π Silver Fern Farms Board-Appointed Farmer Director — A chance for a shareholder to join the board of one of the country's largest meat co-operatives and gain real governance experience. Opens periodically.
π Foundation for Arable Research Associate Director — An 18-month non-voting seat on the board of the arable sector's research organisation, a development role for a future leader to gain governance, strategy and leadership experience while bringing arable knowledge to the table. Open to people with arable sector expertise; employer support required. The board meets five times a year in Christchurch and at regional sites. Applications for each intake, most recently closing 28 August.

Elected and community board seats
Governance roles you reach by election or local nomination, often the most direct way onto a board in your own community.
π Energy consumer trusts — There are 29 electricity lines companies, most owned by community and consumer trusts, and those trusts run elected trustee seats at each local election. A real regional on-ramp most people overlook. Next elections October 2028, with by-elections in between.
π Rural Support Trusts — Fourteen regional charitable trusts across New Zealand supporting rural people through tough times, each run by a local trustee board and regularly seeking new trustees. A genuine regional governance on-ramp. Find your region and enquire any time.
π Beef + Lamb New Zealand Farmer Council — Regional farmer representatives who feed farmer views into the organisation and hold it to account, a well-worn path toward primary-sector governance. Vacancies come up by region.
π Fonterra Co-operative Council — Elected councillors, one per ward, who represent farmer shareholders and scrutinise the co-operative's performance. A recognised stepping stone to the board. Elected each year alongside the annual meeting.
π Livestock Improvement Corporation Shareholder Reference Group — Shareholder representatives who give the board direct farmer feedback on strategy and performance. Expressions of interest usually called mid-year.
π Rabobank Client Councils — Regional councils of the bank's farming clients who shape community investment and rural programmes, a lesser-known but genuine leadership and governance on-ramp. Confirm current openings with the bank.

Thinking of building a pathway of your own?
These programmes exist because someone built them. If you're an organisation, a council, a council-controlled organisation, a co-operative or a region thinking about your own associate or future director programme, that's exactly the kind of work we help with, from designing the programme to connecting you with the right emerging directors.
